Qiang Huo (notopterygium root, 羌活), is the main ingredient in Joint Rescue. It is known to be the best herb in the Chinese medicine for dispelling wind-dampness from the upper body. Huang Qi (Astragalus, 黃琦) is an tonifying herb that treats Blood deficiency and builds Qi. Dang Gui (female ginseng, 当归) works together with Chi Shao (red peony root, 赤芍) to nourish the Blood and harmonize Qi, thereby facilitating the dispelling of the pathogenic Qi. Chi Shao's actions are to tonify the Blood and preserve the Yin, nourish the Liver and assist in the smooth flow of Qi, regulating the meridians and easing pain. Jiang Huang (turmeric, 薑黄) invigorates the Blood and moves Qi. It is specific for spasms and pain in the shoulders and upper arms. Zhi Gan Cao (licorice, 甘草), tonifies Qi and nourishes Spleen Qi, clears heat and dispels toxicity, expels phlegm, relieves spasms and alleviates pain. Da zao (jujube, 大枣) another envoy in this formula, to harmonize the nutritive and protective Qi, enhancing the formula's ability to dispel wind and dampness.
